Winter Mountain Rescue – Specializing in Alpine Rescue

Trained responders who operate in technical backcountry conditions

Winter Mountain Rescue

Winter Mountain Rescue requires specialized training and skills to safely and effectively conduct search and rescue operations in steep, snow-covered terrain that is often inaccessible by motorized equipment. Equipped with backcountry ski and alpine climbing gear, rescue tarps, SKEDS, and toboggans, trained members operate effectively in remote, high-angle environments where swift action can save lives. Members bring advanced medical and avalanche training, along with extensive experience in winter backcountry travel. We work closely with Winter Motorized Mechanized Rescue to coordinate efficient search and rescue operations and collaborate with local outfitters, guides, avalanche forecasters, and ski patrols to strengthen emergency response across the Wallowa Mountains.

WCSO SAR includes members with specialized technical training in this area. While technical rescue operations are conducted by appropriately trained personnel, all members are encouraged to participate in training opportunities to become familiar with the equipment, procedures, and supporting roles necessary for successful rescue operations.
